Here, Sydney-based stylist Natalie Petrevski shares what to look for when investing in outerwear, ways to experiment with texture and the importance of curating your personal style.
When it comes to investing in outerwear pieces, what do you look for?
Investing in outerwear is a personal journey. I’ve always loved oversized coats and jackets, leaving ample room for layering, comfort and creating those exaggerated shapes. I’m forever drawn to strong and masculine tailored pieces, refined and androgynous.
Leather is definitely a staple on high rotation in my wardrobe. I love the toughness of this exterior combined with the trench coat style. Paired with a leather skirt and stomper boots to complete. Matrix reloaded.
Are there certain designs, silhouettes or trends you’re seeing a lot of that are here to stay?
I believe trends come and go, but personal style will always endure. For me, it’s about classic shapes and interesting silhouettes that can be worn time and time again. Everything will always be in the eye of the beholder, but what is here to stay is being entirely yourself, with the style to complement.
What are some ways to extend the life of your outerwear pieces?
Investing in quality designs and ethical makes is key, and really for any wardrobe item. Outerwear should be a staple piece that can be styled and worn in new and interesting ways, whether with layering, colour or texture. It should endure and grow with you.
I love a tonal look made interesting with texture and shape. Pairing this cocoon oversized coat with a mini skirt and boots allows for subtle skin, comfort and ease of movement.
What are some ways to experiment with texture or colour?
Sometimes baby steps are all it takes. Accessories are a great way to introduce colour, whether in jewellery, shoes, bags, belts, etc. Texture is wonderful for layering, I especially love this in tonal looks for an interesting and subtle point of difference.
Denim on denim on denim. A Canadian tuxedo will always be a love of mine. I believe we don’t ever have to match our shades of denim—mix and match and experiment how you like.
