Summer Dress Codes with Fashion Editor Emma Kalfus
Emma Kalfus is a freelance fashion stylist and contributing fashion editor at ELLE Australia.
Based in Sydney, her wardrobe is built around classic designs in monochromatic and tonal shades that can be styled in multiple ways. Here, she shares ideas on styling pieces for summer events, from casual gatherings to elevated occasions.
When it comes to event dressing, what are your wardrobe essentials?
A great-fitting black trouser forms the foundation of many of my outfits as it’s such a versatile piece. In summer, I love wearing crisp white pieces as they look amazing on bronzed skin. And I’m never without a mini bag that fits the beauty essentials and my iPhone.
What are some ways to maximise the longevity of your pieces beyond event season?
I buy separates—tops, pants, shorts, skirts—to mix and match, and pieces in quality fabrics that will last through seasons to come.
THE ELEVATED AFTERNOON
I find these shorts really versatile—they can be suited to both casual day looks and also going out looks when worn with different items such as this halter. On this day, I was heading to two afternoon events that weren’t formal, but needed a slightly dressed-up shoe and mini bag suitable for that sunset time of day. I think black-on-black is fail-safe and I love that I can wear these pieces together and separately, often!
THE FESTIVE GATHERING
This white tucked cotton dress is definitely something I will be wearing on Christmas Day. I love tradition, and what is more traditional than a new white dress for the best day of the year? In a light, breathable cotton fabric, this dress is perfect for days out and about or even a pre-Christmas picnic!
THE CITY DINNER
These black pleat front trousers (worn in a size up) are a real go-to for me as I really love a trouser. A crisp white cotton top with crochet detail paired with my everyday slouch pant and belt makes me feel really confident and most like myself. I would add a great bag to this look, and wear it out to a city dinner or a casual party.
THE SUMMER SOIREE
This tonal look of camel shorts and a button-down vest is my pick for any summer soiree or girls’ lunch. I like that the look has the ability to be dressed up or down, and being separates, I see both of these pieces working back with so many other items in my wardrobe.
